◎History
The Department of Applied Foreign Languages was authorized by the Ministry of Education and formally established on August 1, 1997. There are currently two divisions, English and Japanese.

◎Educational Objectives
Educational objectives are to equip students with at least two foreign languages, English and Japanese, practical commercial knowledge, and foreign language teaching skills. Besides the embodiment of "whole person education", cultivation of critical thinking and independent judgment are greatly emphasized in the department.

◎Special Features
Courses in computer literacy, two-language skills, commercial theories and practice, and language teaching are well coordinated in the curricula. In addition, the sound character of every student is cultivated in a scholarly learning environment.

◎Faculty
Up to the present, nine faculty members hold Ph.D. degrees with the remainder holding a Master degree. Faculty members have professional knowledge in English, Japanese, business, journalism, and language teaching and teacher training. Among them, there are four foreign teachers.

◎Facilities and Equipment
Two language labs, Japanese culture classroom, self-learning room, and multimedia research rooms are well equipped. A CALL center and computer assisted learning center are established on the 7^th floor in our library.

◎Programs and Curricula
College program
4-year B.A. program (day school for both English and Japanese)

Curricular design aims to respond to social need in commerce, tourism communications, and foreign language teaching. It trains qualified personnel with foreign language ability, professional knowledge, humanistic culture and international vision. Courses are designed to develop students’ abilities of listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translation. Students are encouraged to choose their preference from two tracks─business or teaching. Packaged courses are also offered for business and teaching track students. Interdisciplinary programs in tourism and hospitality management are also offered.

◎Career Prospects 
Graduates of the Department of Applied Foreign Languages are able to work as international trade employees, clerks, secretaries, diplomatic employees, tour guides, news reporters, language teachers, and so on. They can also further their studies either domestically or abroad. In short, students in this department may expect a bright future as long as they put their heart and soul into learning.
