◎History
The Institute of Pharmaceutical Technology has been approved for establishment with a program of Master of Sciences in Pharmaceutical Technology in mid 2003.
◎Educational Objective
It is the intention of this program to train students competent in pharmaceutical technology in specified fields for the need of the development of pharmaceuticals and industrial pharmacy, including drugs derived from biotechnology.
◎Educational System
The system will be in accordance with the basic principle pre-determined by the Ministry of Education. Students have to fulfill the program within 2-4 years for a Master's degree in Pharmaceutical Technology. The number of students to be enrolled will be 10 annually for the first phase and will be increased according to the need.
◎Special Features
Research in pharmaceutical manufacturing technology including the GMP emphasis, local and Chinese herbal drug material and the related modernization, application of biotechnology in drug discovery and manufacturing, and the development of synthetic drugs will be the main focus of the school. To allow students being capable of dealing with biotechnology in the future, all students have to acquire general training in biotech in addition to classes and research associated with the corresponding major fields.
◎Faculty Members
Faculty members with Ph.D., 24, and M.S. degrees in different proposed major fields are available. Among them, 3 are full professors, 20 are associate professors and 6 are assistant professors.
◎Teaching and Research Facilities
Our facilities includes several specialized research laboratories, among them, the Chinese Herbal Shop (the Chinese Herbal Medicinal Center ) , the Dispensary Laboratory, the Dosage Preparation Laboratory, the Animal Testing Laboratory, and the Department Library. The major research facilities includes a 400 MHz NMR spectrometer, High Performance Liquid Chromatography apparatus, Gas Chromatography apparatus, Infrared Spectrophotometers, Ultraviolet-Visible Spectrophotometers, Amino Acid Analyzer, Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), Freeze-dryer, Ultra High Speed Centrifuge, Revolving Cylinder Tester and Dissolution Cylinder Testers and Dissolution Testers.
◎Curriculum Description
The design of the curriculum is based on the vast diverse of pharmaceutical technology. Four major fields including pharmaceutical technology and pharmaceutics, biotechnology, pharmacognosy and herbal drug material, and medicinal chemistry, are implemented. Courses related to each field have been specified. Students in different major fields have to take biotechnology class as a general requirement. A student has to take 14-16 credit hours from required courses including seminar, with additional credit hours from selected courses acquired from courses offered in the school or in the outside institutes or universities.
◎Career Prospectives
This institute is the first graduate school in Taiwan devoted to the training of specialist in pharmaceutical technology. It is different from other graduate institutes affiliated to other pharmacy school in Taiwan that basic research in pharmaceutical sciences are the major goal. The research and the graduates of the school will facilitate local pharmaceutical industry, including the newly developing biotech companies, by providing competent personnel in research and manufacturing applications as well the mutual corporation with other Institutes.
